For most people GIS is one of those words that don’t really mean anything. And lately we have seen many articles downplaying the term GIS. While we do agree that GIS is a confusing term for the masses what it does is lost in the message. Going further it’s value is always overlooked especially in the private sector. So what is GIS worth?
How do you answer this ambiguous question? One could start with the value of assembling data with high accuracy and making easy to understand maps from it. Or being able to bring together vast complex information and showing it’s patterns visually. How about a straight forward web map of hundreds of datasets specially designed and built for your target audience so they can have a seamless and fast user experience?
Based on our experience we think GIS worth, TIME.
Time is measured and valued differently by everyone. We have found that if we build the last example noted above it empowers our users to be more efficient with their time. That could translate into more real estate deals, or faster understanding of the marketplace or even piece of mind. How exactly do you value that? For some people the value is sky high because they know they are more knowledgeable and efficient about their daily business while using these GIS based tools. They don’t have to know how it works or even know the right name. (We are good with that by the way).
Overall we enjoy knowing that people find value in what they are using and they elevate their game due to it. Ultimately that is where GIS worth really is. Empowering people with better information in less time.
