A look back at one of the largest cases I worked on in the HOA and Legal Realms that lead to a positive end.

John Morris Presents on Using GIS Technology and Digital Mapping at Trial – Morris DeVoe – Utah HOA Law

On August 31, 2017, John Morris teamed up with Matt Liapis, a GIS expert, to discuss GIS and digital mapping technology and how it can be used in litigation. Specifically, John explained how this technology was used by Morris DeVoe in obtaining a fifteen-million-dollar judgment.

GIS presents a new opportunity for visualizing and analyzing property ownership on a massive scale and in a way that simplifies and quantifies a tremendous amount of data in simple to see and understand maps. Matt Liapis testified as a GIS expert in the trial and was able to effectively and efficiently demonstrate on digital maps the ownership of thousands of parcels of property at several different time periods. He was further able to visualize and quantify hundreds of lots upon which certain documents had been recorded.

Using alternative methods of quantifying and presenting this data such as through traditional title searches and reports would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. In contrast, the GIS analysis and mapping was more persuasive, easily understood, and cost a small fraction of that amount. Morris DeVoe uses cutting edge technology in litigation and trial both to increase the persuasiveness of their arguments and to keep costs down.

Now that we have your attention with the custom property map look. How is this done? It all starts with the data, and highlighting what is important to the property. The twist is making the finished product look top notch with custom design elements giving it that polished look.

Starting from current imagery sources we extract out the core data starting with the property boundaries and label with address # or lot information for locating units/buildings. Then adding in the building on top of the property. Next is the grounds, separating out the roads from the public or private spaces. Parking areas, Pools, Parks, Tennis Courts, Fields, Playgrounds, Walkways and even Trees. All combined they assemble the basics of the property.

You can display that information over high resolution imagery or render all of this information if it were hand drawn Giving it that custom high end look that is consumer and resident friendly. We think this clean custom version of a property map is amazing to look at. And we know you will like it as well for your next property map project.
